VALENTINE'S HISTORY
February 14 is Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine. Today couples tend to be delivered so many sweet flowers and other gifts to show their love. This festival originated as a tribute to St. Valentine Catholic bishop.
Eight hundred years before the establishment of the feast of St. Valentine, the Romans celebrated a ritual to honor the pagan god Lupercus, among young men, the same consisted of a lottery in which elected the random from a box the name of a teenage girl to be his partner for the following year. Pope Gelasius to reverse that pagan festival called for a change in the lottery. Instead of the names of young women the box would contain the names of Saints would have to emulate over the next year, which was not liked by young people. Instead of the pagan god Lupercus the church was looking for a saint to replace him. They believed that Saint Valentine was appropriate, since the Emperor Claudius had forbidden the marriage of the young men of his empire, but ignoring the Valentine secretly married which came to him. When I find out that I try to convert Claudio Valentin a pagan.
But Valentine reversed the strategy trying to convert Claudius, who imprisoned him and ordered him beheaded.
During his captivity Valentine fell in love with his jailer's daughter who was blind, his love for her and her great faith miraculously healed of his blindness to the girl before her death. Before being beheaded sent a message to the girl with the signature "from your Valentine" phrase that has become popular to this day as the signing of the cards between the lovers. In the fourth century, Pope Julius I had built on the Via Flaminia, where the saint was dead, a basilica that was for many centuries visits by pilgrims who wished to venerate the relics. Even one of the gates in the wall that gave access to the city of Rome and was on this site, was renamed "Valentine's Door."
Some believe it is a Christianized pagan holiday, as in ancient Rome was by this time the worship of the god of love, whose name was Eros and whom many have been sympathetic to call Cupid. Also, and for many centuries, it was traditional in England (it is estimated that in the XVII and XVIII) the "party of valentines", where men and women elected for a pair. At any rate, almost Valentine's surprise, is the pattern of all lovers and all those who want to have a girlfriend or a friend to accompany them not just go to the movies, the club or to dinner, but also to raise a family "to be happily ever after" . Valentine's Day is very popular especially in English speaking countries: the United States and Britain and in much of the entire European continent.
